Dance or Die II

Studio B - May 13th, 2008

Another positively explosive experience - finally getting to see "Cut Copy" (the electo genies from down under) perform since I missed them earlier this year. The hot stuffs that they are actually had two opening bands. We strolled in 2 hours after doors opened and caught the end of "Mobius Band". Don't really remember what they sounded like, but I'm sure it was pleasant.

Now, the second act, the "Black Kids, I have heard of. They properly started the dance party off with some funky beats sung by a lead singer with a delicate whiny voice and sweet girlie back-up vocals.

And finally "Cut Copy"! The show got super dancey and sweaty, always a sure sign of fun times. (You could tell that they were completely soaked by the end of the show - Tim's pale blue shirt had turned dark blue except the very bottom edges ... ew, but kinda hot, no?). This was one intense-awesome performance - would have tried stalking the darlings if it weren't a Tuesday night.

(This was taken during the last song when everyone gave into some sort of raw insanity; Dan proceeded to turn his keyboard-synths in circles)

Experience some of the joy by watching "Hearts on Fire"

Dance or Die

Highline Ballroom - May 3rd, 2008

This concert was so dancey, so high-energy, so sweaty - it was amazing!
I had never heard of the opening band "Heartsrevolution" before, but had to download their music the very next day. The lead singer was crazy in the most charming way; the songs were pleasantly electro-dissonant; great lead-up to "Yelle".

Then when Yelle came on, everyone got a bit rowdier for a serious dance party - if you weren't, you would be trampled by the five people surrounding you who would be jumping belligerently like the drunkards they were. Yelle who sings naughty French pop (which is hot by default) worked the stage, and kept the energy level at a constant high throughout with no slow songs. This beats going to the gym anyday.

Really wanted a full recording of 'A Cause Des Garcons' but couldnt help jumping from over-excitement, so I gave up. Nevertheless, here are two songs I managed to stay still enough for:

Mmm ... Salty

So this is what the schools and parents across the country are picking as a healthy alternative for youngsters these days - salty, frozen pickle juice ... so appealing right?

Feist-y

Hammerstein Ballroom - April 30th, 2008

So this is definitely the mellow-ist concert I have ever been to; so mellow I didn't even bother running to the front in an obnoxious concert-goer way. Just kind of waddled myself into the middle of the crowd, past all the parents with kids on their shoulders (talk about a mixed crowd).
Feist dearest didn't do any of her cute dances (which would have been welcome) but she jammed on her guitar all night which was pretty badass. She sounds amazing live, exactly like my mp3s but with an added natural breathy quality. They had a live shadow-puppet-master do pretty things on a projector throughout the night as well.
The opening band "Hayden" which was more 'guy and his harmonica' than 'band' was disappointing. All the songs sounded like the same generic acoustic love song, and yet he felt the need to preface each one with the explanation of "this is a love song ..."
Anyhoo, loved the Canadian-ness of it all - Feist, Hayden, my Canadian friend - it was like "aboot" everywhere. Hahaha ... ok, I joke.
