Now that I live in Brooklyn and have a 'commute' to work I have been gettin' my read on. Just finished "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen. Despite a somewhat predictable plot concerning love and adversity it's worth the read. Set in the bygone era of America's Great Depression and the days of old circus glamour, Gruen manages to create circus characters that evoke humanity more than caricature; her writing comes out especially in her empathetic depictions of more senior folk. The book was inspired by pictures from the heyday of circus trains; and is filled with 'true' amusing anecdotes of circus life. Lets hope that when they adapt this to movie (cuz I just know they will), it will live up to our expectations and visuals of the gritty glamour of life back then.
